General Manager

Jan Peter van der Ree

Meet the General Manager of Park Hyatt Zurich and Area Director for Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy and Marocco.

At home in which country: Global citizen, but more precisely Holland.

Favorite game: Table soccer.  In Swiss German this is called “Töggelichaschte”!

Favourite restaurant: Mezza9 restaurant at Grand Hyatt Singapore, featuring nine different authentic dining experiences in one restaurant.  A party can order lasagna, sushi, Hainan chicken and rice and more at the same table.  A dining hit since the late nineties!

Insider travel trip: Myanmar – one of the last authentic experiences in Asia.  Travel now before it is too late.

I never travel without: My lucky little Kipling bag – a souvenir from Vietnam.

Things I love about Park Hyatt Zurich: Aside from the team I work with, I love “Zürich’s living-room”, the Park Lounge, the fresh market food at Parkhuus and the timeless elegance of all areas of the hotel!

Career journey: After obtaining a bachelor’s degree at The Hague Hotel School, I began my Hyatt journey over twenty six years ago as part of the Food & Beverage team at Hyatt Regency Cologne.  Afterwards, I worked in the far and near east at seven other Hyatt operations before joining Park Hyatt Zürich in beautiful Switzerland.

A day in the life of Jan Peter van der Ree: I always make sure not to schedule more than half of the day!  The wonderful thing about working in the hotel business is that no day is like any other, and you never know what is coming next!  My only regular activities are a good lunch and a cup of Earl Grey tea at 4:00pm.

Other interests: Outdoor activities like hiking, skiing and golfing are complemented nowadays by pilates and an insatiable curiosity for history.

My favorite location in Zurich: I really like the Sihlwald, which is located near to where I live.  I enjoy taking my dogs there for an early morning walk, as it is a calm and soothing contrast to the buzzing city.

Michael Thumsch
Park Hyatt Zurich Concierge
+41 43 883 1052

The world of hotel concierges is diverse and fascinating.  Michael Tumsch, head concierge at Park Hyatt Zürich, has worked as a concierge for 11 years.  A look, a word — he does not need much to know what a guest wants.  There has rarely been a client’s desire he could not fulfil, though there are always requests he has never heard before.  And that is exactly what brings constant joy to his job: the recurring challenge of and opportunity for creating stays guests will remember long after they have checked out.

What's the most important thing you have learned about travelling?
It is important for me to learn about the culture and lifestyle of the places that I visit.  I like to rely on recommendations from local guides and onsite concierges.  This enables me to experience things that are not in every guidebook.

What is your favourite cultural place to walk to from the hotel?
Of the museums in the area, I prefer the Kunsthaus Zürich.  The collection now contains about 4,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, from the Middle Ages to contemporary art.  Small but nice and more of an insider tip is the Museum Rietberg, the only museum for non-European art in Switzerland.  In the evening I enjoy listening to a concert at the Tonhalle or, once in a while, an opera.

You have CHF 15 to spend on lunch, where would you eat?  If you had CHF 500?
A bratwurst served with spicy mustard from the world-famous Sternengrill — eaten with your hands, of course — is always special.  Here you see a lot of opera buffs and concertgoers who are looking for a refreshment shortly before a show.  In warm weather, I enjoy this snack sitting on the lakeshore with its views of the Alps.  For a special dinner, the restaurant Isebähnli is perfect.  It features high-quality cuisine, a large selection of wines and a relaxed atmosphere.

What have guests been asking about lately?  What kind of experiences are they looking for?
Guests who stopover in Zürich during a longer journey book a city tour, cruise on Lake Zürich or watch a show at the Opera House.  Other guests stay in Zürich due to its location, taking day trips around Switzerland and visiting famous cities such as Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern or Basel.  During winter there are some requests for trips to ski resorts.

If you could learn to create one dish at the hotel’s restaurant, what would it be?
Without a doubt, it would be our restaurant parkhuus’ specialty “Roasted Salmon on Cedar Wood”, prepared by Chef Sebastian Wirsching and his team.  Since the hotel opened more than 10 years ago, the dish has delighted our guests and become very popular.  The salmon comes from the world-famous Loch Fyne in Scotland, and a former chef from Norway brought us the recipe.

What is your favourite piece of artwork in the hotel?
To the left of the concierge desk hangs the painting “Brushstrokes” by Sol LeWitt, who is one of the main representatives of Minimalism.  He has not only played with geometric variations, but also with developing irrational effects.

Is there an interesting fact about the hotel that many people don’t know?
Our modern and trendy ONYX Bar is a popular place to meet people.  It is one of those hotel bars that manages the balancing act between being a public bar for locals and a bar for hotel guests.  Also, during the last decade, the bar has been a location for photo shoots and film productions.

Can you tell us about a rare and unique experience you have curated for your guests?
Many foreign visitors who travel to Switzerland and want to buy chocolate automatically think of Lindt & Sprüngli.  We offer guests the “My Sweet Zürich” tour, which consists of small private groups visiting smaller confectioneries and shops where they learn about and try more of the variety of Swiss chocolates.

Is there one other Park Hyatt hotel or resort in particular that you love or are dying to visit?
I hope to visit Park Hyatt Sydney in the near future.  Right on the harbour, with views of the Opera House — that is how I imagine Sydney.
