The Zurich Opera, which opened in 1891, is in the centre of the city and is the smallest of the major international operas (with just 1,100 seats).  However, it offers a many faceted repertoire.

Since 2012, the team there has been led by Andreas Homoki. It hosts performances of world stars of classical music, offering much pleasure and engagement, as well as numerous debuts and premiere performances.

The Zurich Opera is one of the leading opera and ballet stages in Europe.  Both art forms appeal to a wide audience, making the Zurich Opera a destination for many different generations.  In addition to the musical, theatre and ballet performances, the Zurich Opera also organises philharmonic concerts, morning performances, recitals, productions on the studio stage, acts for children, and jazz concerts.

To see more of the background of the Opera, the Zurich Opera gives the guests the opportunity to visit special events during the year.  The most popular events are listed town bellow.

Opera ball:

Saturday, 10 March 2017

Every year in March, the opera ball takes place here. During this event you can meet many notable people from the entertainment industry, economics, sports and politics.

Guide tours

To explore more of the history of the Zurich Opera and the productions, the opera offers guides through the back of the house. During the 1.5-hour tour, the guests can visit the carpenters, the properties, the stage and the make-up room. Because the attendance is limited, there are also private tours available to 20 persons.

The guides are in different languages and occur on Saturday afternoons.

Introduction Matinée

With every new opera production, guests can take the opportunity to speak to the conductor, the stage director, and the costume and stage designer to learn more about the show.  The event takes place on Sunday afternoon and gives a better view of the opera performance and behind the scenes.

Brunch Concert

Opera visitors can spend Sunday morning at the Zurich Opera house.  Ten times a year, guests can enjoy a rich brunch after a special concert in the Belcanto restaurant near the opera.  During the brunch, it is possible to speak to the artists.  There is a very easy atmosphere here.
